How to Use the Pay Raise Calculator

  1. Select Your Compensation Basis: Choose between Hourly Wage or Annual Salary.
  2. Enter Current Earnings: Input your current hourly pay rate (e.g. $25.00/hr) or baseline yearly salary (e.g. $65,000).
  3. Choose a Raise Calculation Mode:
    • Percentage Increase: Standard merit raises or cost-of-living adjustments (COLA) expressed as a percentage (e.g. 3.5% or 5.0%).
    • Dollar Amount Increase: A specific flat bump (e.g. an extra $2.00/hr or a $5,000 salary increase).
    • New Target Pay: Directly enter a target pay rate or job offer figure to calculate the implied percentage and dollar gain.
  4. Adjust Working Hours (For Hourly Workers): If you work part-time or seasonal hours, customize the average hours per week (default is standard full-time: 40 hrs/wk, equal to 2,080 annual hours).

Formulas and Mathematical Methods

The calculator computes equivalents across all four primary payroll frequencies (Hourly, Weekly, Monthly, Annually) using standard full-time conventions:

  • Percentage Increase:Dollar Increase = Current Pay × (Raise Percentage / 100)
New Pay = Current Pay + Dollar Increase
  • Flat Dollar Increase:Percentage Increase = (Dollar Increase / Current Pay) × 100
New Pay = Current Pay + Dollar Increase
  • Annualization for Hourly Pay:Annual Pay = Hourly Rate × Working Hours Per Week × 52 Weeks
    Example: $25.00/hr × 40 hrs/wk × 52 weeks = $52,000 / year (2,080 hours).
  • Monthly Conversion:Monthly Pay = Annual Salary / 12 Months

Worked Example: Evaluating a 5% Raise

Suppose you earn $25.00 per hour working 40 hours per week (2,080 annual hours) and receive a 5% merit increase:

TimeframeCurrent CompensationNew Compensation (+5%)Total Dollar Increase
Hourly$25.00 / hr$26.25 / hr+$1.25 / hr
Weekly (40 hrs)$1,000.00 / wk$1,050.00 / wk+$50.00 / wk
Monthly$4,333.33 / mo$4,550.00 / mo+$216.67 / mo
Annually (52 wks)$52,000.00 / yr$54,600.00 / yr+$2,600.00 / yr

Assumptions and Important Limitations

  • Gross vs. Take-Home Pay: All outputs represent gross pre-tax compensation. This tool does not calculate net take-home pay, federal/state/local income tax withholding, Social Security or Medicare (FICA) taxes, healthcare plan deductions, or employer retirement contributions.
  • Overtime and Bonuses Not Included: The calculator assumes standard base pay and does not account for variable bonuses, commissions, hazard pay, or overtime premiums.
  • Standard 52-Week Year: Calculations assume a standard 52-week payroll year. Leap years or bi-weekly pay schedules with 27 pay periods in certain calendar years will introduce slight timing variances.
