- Total Roofing Squares: Converts your roof area into the North American roofing industry's standard unit of measurement. One roofing "square" equals exactly 100 square feet of roof plane surface, regardless of pitch, angle, or architectural style.
- Bundles Needed (Before Waste): Multiplies your total square count by your shingle's specific bundle packaging rate. For standard 3-tab and architectural laminated shingles, 3 bundles cover 1 square (approximately 33.3 sq ft per bundle). Premium heavyweight shingles often require 4 or 5 bundles per square.
- Bundles Needed (With Waste Buffer): The actual purchase quantity to order from your lumberyard or roofing supplier. Waste covers starter courses, ridge cap fabrication (if cut from 3-tab), hip and valley angle cuts, and job site breakage. It is not optional padding — it represents real expected physical loss.
- Footprint to Sloped Area Adjustment: If you input ground footprint and pitch instead of direct area, the engine first calculates the geometric slope multiplier factor (
√(1 + (pitch ÷ 12)²)) to convert flat horizontal area into true sloped surface plane area before calculating material squares.

- Manufacturer Packaging: Standard 3-tab and fiberglass architectural shingles generally yield 3 bundles per square. However, heavyweight luxury shingles, shake profiles, and slate-look composites frequently package 4 or 5 bundles per square. Always verify the manufacturer's wrapper spec before ordering.
- Specialty Linear Trim: This tool estimates field shingle coverage. Ridge caps, starter courses, step flashing, and drip edges are measured in linear feet rather than square footage and should be calculated separately.
